Prepare For Spring Green Up! 7 Lawn Care Tips

Updated: Jun 24

As we bid farewell to a mostly mild winter here in Central Texas, it’s time to turn our attention to our lawns. With temperatures expected to hover in the 70s and 80s through early March, many lawns are already showing signs of life, slowly greening up and coming out of dormancy. However, we’re not entirely out of the frost danger zone just yet—the average last frost date for our area is March 4th, and historically, it has been as late as March 24th.

To ensure your lawn is prepped for a lush and healthy spring, here are seven essential lawn care tips:

1. Sharpen Mower Blades

Inspect and sharpen your mower blades or consider replacing them if they are dull and pitted. Dull blades can tear the grass rather than cutting it cleanly, which promotes disease and weakens your lawn.

2. Limit Foot Traffic

Dormant grass is more susceptible to damage from heavy foot traffic. Try to minimize walking on your lawn until it has fully greened up and is actively growing.

3. Mild Mowing of Bermuda Lawns

If your Bermuda grass looks long and uneven, it’s time for a trim. Mowing during the off-season prevents the grass from becoming too tall and helps maintain a neat appearance.

4. Edge Around Driveways and Walks

Check the edges around your driveways and walkways. If grass is growing over the edges, use a string trimmer or edger tool to clean them up. Well-defined edges contribute to a polished look.

5. Mow Low and Bag

Mowing low and bagging the clippings helps remove the layer of dead grass that acts as an insulating blanket. This allows sunlight to reach the soil, warming it up and encouraging new growth.

6. Make Plans for Lawn Leveling

If you’re considering lawn leveling this year, now is the time to get quotes and schedule the service. The best time to level is between late April and September when the grass is green and actively growing. While we do not offer this service, we can connect you with a highly recommended local leveling expert.

7. Garden Bed Prep

Spring is an excellent time to clean your garden beds, add mulch, and plan for spring planting. A well-maintained garden bed complements a healthy lawn, enhancing the overall appearance of your landscape.
