Lawn Care Costs: How to Compare Estimates Without Getting Fooled

If you’ve ever requested quotes from lawn care companies in Central Texas, you’ve probably noticed something confusing: no two estimates look alike. One company quotes a monthly price. Another quotes per visit. A third gives you one big number for the whole year.
Here’s the truth most homeowners learn the hard way: the price you see is not always the total cost. Understanding how each company structures its pricing is the key to making the right choice for your lawn — and your wallet.
Comparing Apples to Oranges
Let’s look at a common example.
Imagine you receive two estimates:
- Company A: $100 per month
- Company B: $150 per treatment
At first glance, Company A looks cheaper. But take a closer look:
- Company A’s $100/month is $1,200 per year
- Company B’s $150 per treatment is based on 8 visits per year, which comes to $1,200 per year
Wait — those are the same total.
But the number of treatments behind that total may not be. Some “monthly” quotes include fewer actual visits to your lawn, thinner product coverage, or services bundled in name only. A per-treatment price only looks higher until you multiply it out and count what your lawn actually receives.
The takeaway: whenever you evaluate a lawn care estimate, don’t stop at the monthly or per-visit number. Ask two questions:
- How many treatments does this include for the full year?
- What’s the total cost for the full program?
That’s the only honest way to compare.
A few Notes on our Estimates:
Starting Mid-Season? Here’s What Your Estimate Includes
If you sign up partway through the treatment year, your estimate should reflect only the services that remain in the current season’s schedule.
On our estimates, services shown in gray fall outside this year’s application window — they’re not included in your first season, because applying certain products at the wrong time of year doesn’t help your lawn (and sometimes hurts it). Timing matters in turf care, especially in Central Texas, where our weed cycles and growing seasons don’t wait for anyone.
So your first-year estimate total reflects the remaining visits for the current calendar year. Beginning next calendar year, your lawn receives the complete 8-visit annual program.
Example:
- If your estimate is $100 per treatment, and there are only 3 visits left for the year, you would pay $300 for this year’s remaining visits.
- Next year when you get all 8 visits your yearly total is $800.
No Big Upfront Payment Required
Some companies want a large payment when you approve your estimate. We don’t.
With Marshall Lawn Solutions:
- Your estimate total represents the combined cost of the remaining treatments for the current calendar year — not an amount due today.
- You’re charged after each completed visit, one treatment at a time.
- There are no contracts.
The only thing we require to approve your estimate is a payment method on file to reserve your spot on our schedule. Optional add-on services — like fire ant control, fungus control, or Bluestem treatment — are available and priced separately in addition to the 8-visit program service cost.
Visits Timed for Results, Not for the Calendar
Our 8-visit program is built around Central Texas conditions. Visits are typically scheduled about every six weeks, based on ideal product timing — pre-emergents before weeds germinate, fertilization during peak growing periods, and soil treatments when they’ll do the most good.
That schedule is the whole reason we can keep your lawn thick, green, and weed-free through Bell County’s tough summers and unpredictable springs.
The Bottom Line
When comparing lawn care estimates, slow down and do the math:
| What to Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Total annual cost | The real price tag, not the monthly teaser |
| Number of treatments per year | Fewer visits often means thinner results |
| What’s included per visit | Fertilizer, pre- and post-emergent, grub control, and more aren’t created equal |
| When you pay | Pay-as-you-go or big upfront payments |
| Contracts | You should stay because of results, not paperwork |
The cheapest-looking estimate is rarely the best value — and the most expensive-looking one is rarely as costly as it appears. Look at the full year, count the treatments, and choose the company that’s honest about exactly what your lawn is getting.
